NIT Meghalaya stands for National Institute of Technology Meghalaya. Also, the institute is popular as NITM. NIT Meghalaya was established in 2010. Additionally, the institute has the funding support from the Ministry of Human Resource Development, the Government of India.

NIT Meghalaya is situated in Shillong. To reach Shillong by Air one has to take a flight to Gopinath Bordoloi Airport, Guwahati, Assam. The distance from the airport is 120 km. From there, one can reach Shillong in three hours by hiring Taxi.

The nearest railway station is Guwahati. From the railway station, you can travel by bus or shared taxi to Shillong. Generally, it takes about 3 hours to reach Shillong.

NIT Meghalaya Overview

The mission of the institute is to impart quality education in the fields of Engineering, Science and Technology at Undergraduate as well as Postgraduate levels with special attention to encourage innovation and creativity in these fields in a clean and healthy environment.

NIT Meghalaya Campus

Presently, the institute functions from its temporary campus at the Bijni Complex. It is located in Laitumkhrah, Shillong, of the North Eastern Hill University. However, the Institute has an allotted plot of land of about 300 acres(another 73 acres are to be added soon) at East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya for its permanent campus.


Presently, the construction of the modern state-of-the-art campus is going on. The new campus will come with several amenities and accommodation facilities. The list includes

i. 25,000 sqm academic and administrative buildings

ii. Boys hostels for a capacity of 1500

iii. Girls hostel(s) for a capacity of 400

iv. 120 residences of various categories

v. 100 room guest house

vi. Health Centre

vii. 1500 capacity auditorium

viii. Indoor stadium etc.

Sports & Recreation

NIT Meghalaya organizes two major college fests—Cognitia, technical fest, and Shishir, cultural fest—in an academic year. Besides these, the college also organizes sports fest. There is student council to preside student affairs which are elected through voting by exclusively students every year.


Institute has engaged a doctor who visits the campus thrice in a week. Additionally, Institute has an agreement with a reputed hospital in the state for treatment of its students, faculty, and staff on a priority basis. Generally, the Institute reimburses the expenses.

Library & Book Bank

The Central Library houses the popular titles in Engineering, Technology, Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences and Management to enrich the students with requisite knowledge and expertise. It has a rich collection of around 10,000 text and reference books and electronic resources. In addition to this, the Library provides access to the Digital Library of ACM, IEEE, and ASME.

Eligibility & Mode of Admission in NIT Meghalaya

One needs to take the JEE (MAIN) exam and secure at least 75% marks (65% for SC/ST) in Class 12th exam or be in the top 20 percentile in Class 12th exam conducted by the respective board. Admissions are on the basis of rank in JEE (Main).
